No direct sun expected today, with barely a breath of wind and the barometer holding steady. The water to cover at Lac Scalde is the shaded margin through bright spells. Numbers are low everywhere; the middle of the day is the pick of them. Take the small wins and call it early if it dies. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Lac Scalde falls in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, part of Quebec. It sits in northern bush. This is a pocket water of some 10 hectares, and every part of it is reachable from the bank. The edge runs 2.8 km or so, easy to work in an afternoon. The closest town, Val-d'Or, is 56 km away. Gatineau is the closest city, 281 km away. No border sits close enough to matter.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Across Abitibi-Témiscamingue, recorded fish include northern pike, yellow perch, walleye and white sucker. Species recorded across the county may be limited to a few waters. Anyone new to Lac Scalde should walk it once before setting up.
The warm month here averages 17°C; the cold one sits at -16°C. Winter runs most of the calendar, and everything worth doing happens in the gap. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough early May. Break-up near early May, freeze-up near mid November: that is the shape of an average year. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. That is the shape of the year on Lac Scalde.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Mapping shows an empty shoreline: no ramp, no jetty, no marked entry. Pike mean a wire trace, no exceptions; big spoons and jerkbaits do the searching. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Failing this one, try Lac du Nomade, 0.6 km away. Rules at Lac Scalde are worth checking on the day.
