Dull, settled light over the water, with barely a breath of wind with the barometer flat. Expect most activity at Lac Sanford around inflow corners and shaded margins. One clear peak today: the morning. Slow down and let the fish find the bait. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

The Mauricie end of Quebec holds Lac Sanford. It lies 370 metres above sea level. About 8 hectares of surface, which puts the far bank inside easy sight. For supplies, Laurentides is 39 km out. Then La Tuque, 43 km, and Saint-Raymond, 71 km. Not far off: Lac Elissa out at 0.8 km, Lac Chevautier the better part of 1 km, Lac Aufret out at 2.3 km, Lac Plat the better part of 2.5 km and Lac Mantry out at 2.7 km. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Fish documented in Mauricie include northern pike, brook trout, walleye, yellow perch and white sucker. The county list is broader than any single water. The near bank of Lac Sanford is often the one people ignore.
On the long-term average, July reads 17°C and January reads -16°C. Winter puts a hard lid on this one. Ice-out usually falls in early May, and the weeks after it fish hardest. From about early May to around mid November, expect open water on the long-run figures. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. On Lac Sanford the same rules apply, with local timing.
No access rule appears in what we hold. Formal access is not mapped, so the last stretch is likely on foot. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. If the gate is shut, Lac Elissa at 0.8 km is the nearest alternative. Ask locally about Lac Sanford if anything is unclear.
