Cloud from horizon to horizon today, with a whisper of wind from the SSW and the barometer holding steady. Whatever swims in Lac Roy should be near the shallows early and the drop later. Little to get excited about, though the middle of the day holds a sliver of promise. Downsize everything and pick the calmest water.

Set in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Quebec, this is Lac Roy. It sits in boreal forest. With some 23 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. Shoreline comes to about 2.9 km, small enough to learn in a day. Ferme-Neuve is the closest town at 112 km. Gatineau sits 241 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
Our records hold no depth for this water. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. County-wide records name northern pike, yellow perch, walleye, white sucker and brown bullhead. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. On Lac Roy the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
Long-run averages give July about 17°C and January about -17°C. Cold dominates the year and the fishing works around it. After early May the shallows warm and the fish move up. Average temperatures cross freezing around early May in spring and again near mid November in autumn. Look to early summer and the first cool weeks of autumn. On Lac Roy that shapes the whole year.
No access rule appears in what we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. Lac Stramond, 1.5 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Check the current arrangement for Lac Roy.
