A closed sky with even light today, with a useful SSW wind pushing food about with the glass holding level. Start the search at Lac Rouge along reed fringes and open pockets. The day peaks in the night. Work fewer spots, but work them properly. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

In Quebec, Lac Rouge falls inside Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean. The surface lies 438 metres up. The water covers some 33 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. Shoreline comes to about 4.3 km, small enough to learn in a day. On our Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean list it sits near the top for size. Leblanc is the closest town at 85 km. Further out sit Chibougamau (104 km) and Chapais (105 km). The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
There is no published depth for this one, so start shallow and work out. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Across Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean, recorded fish include northern pike, Atlantic salmon and lake whitefish. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. On Lac Rouge the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
July runs about 16°C on average, January about -18°C. A short, intense season is the rule this far north. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around early May. On the long-run averages the water opens up around early May and starts locking again about mid November. Reckon on open water from spring through to late autumn, with May and June the strongest. Anyone fishing Lac Rouge regularly works to that calendar.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Nothing is mapped in the way of a ramp or car park within a short radius. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Lac Rai at 0.9 km is the sensible second choice. Rules at Lac Rouge are worth checking on the day.
