Flat light and a covered sky today, with mild air moving in from the SW and steady pressure. Give structure within a cast of the bank the first hour at Lac Riek. Quiet conditions all day, with the morning marginally better. Quiet tactics only; the fish will not chase today. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Lac Riek lies in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Quebec. Around the bank it is lake country bush. About 5 hectares of surface, which puts the far bank inside easy sight. It is a small entry by Abitibi-Témiscamingue standards. For supplies, Val-d'Or is 109 km out. The big place round here is Gatineau, 224 km distant. No border sits close enough to matter.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Across Abitibi-Témiscamingue, recorded fish include northern pike, yellow perch, walleye and white sucker. County records show the wider picture rather than this one place. On Lac Riek the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
Averages here run 17°C at the top of summer and -16°C at the bottom of winter. Seasons are distinct, and each one fishes differently. Ice-out usually falls in early May, and the weeks after it fish hardest. Expect the water usable from around early May until roughly late November. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. That shapes the year on Lac Riek.
No access rule appears in what we hold. There is a launch about 900 m from the bank. There is a campsite 830 m from the water. Pike mean a wire trace, no exceptions; big spoons and jerkbaits do the searching. Provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. The nearest alternative is Lac Pinus, 1.8 km out. Ask locally about Lac Riek if anything is unclear.
