An even grey lid over the water, with calm air over the water with the glass holding level. Start the search at Lac Odru along inflow corners and shaded margins. A stay-home graph, with the middle of the day as the one excuse to go. Downsize everything and pick the calmest water. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Set in Outaouais, Quebec, this is Lac Odru. It lies 381 metres above sea level. Surface area runs to about 6 hectares — small enough to read in one session. Nearest place of any size is Saint-Boniface, 78 km away. It is 186 km to Gatineau, the nearest city. Within a short drive: Lac Naix 0.9 km away, Lac Evoy 1.2 km, Lac Ubac 1.2 km away, Lac Quarte 1.4 km and Lac Palmoula 1.5 km away. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
There is no recorded depth, so work from what you can see. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Survey and observation records for Outaouais include pumpkinseed, yellow perch and smallmouth bass. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. Lac Odru repays a walk before the first cast.
Temperature averages peak at 17°C in July and bottom out at -17°C in January. Winter closes the water for a while, and the reopening is worth catching. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around early May. Expect the water usable from around early May until roughly late November. Spring is short and heavy here; autumn is longer and steadier. The season on Lac Odru rarely departs from it.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. For a change of water, Lac Naix is 0.9 km distant. For Lac Odru in particular, ask before you travel.
