A grey, even sky over the water, with just enough SSW wind to ripple the surface with the barometer flat. Start the search at Lac Newman along the shaded margin through bright spells. Save your energy for the morning. Stay mobile and follow the activity. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Out in Laurentides, Quebec, sits Lac Newman. It sits at 397 metres above sea level. At roughly 2 hectares, the whole thing is within casting reach of a single walk. It is a small entry by Laurentides standards. The town to know is Saint-Adolphe-d'Howard, 4.1 km out. Beyond it, Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts at 7.9 km and Val-David at 7.9 km. Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. County-wide records name pumpkinseed, smallmouth bass, yellow perch and brook trout. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. The near bank of Lac Newman is often the one people ignore.
Average temperature peaks around 18°C in July and bottoms out near -14°C in January. Seasons are distinct, and each one fishes differently. Break-up comes around late April, and the run that follows is short and strong. Expect the water usable from around late April until roughly late November. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. Plan any trip to Lac Newman around it.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. Nothing built is recorded close to the bank here. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Check whether a boat is allowed before you tow one. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. For a change of water, Lac Pelletier is 1.1 km distant. For Lac Newman, the notice at the access point is the final word.
