Flat light and a covered sky today, with a whisper of wind from the S with the barometer flat. The fish at Lac Montenon are likely to sit near the margins and the shelf beyond them. Little to get excited about, though the night holds a sliver of promise. Lower the pace and stay patient.

Set in Quebec, Lac Montenon is a Quebec water. The country round it is taiga from end to end. This is big water, about 10.58 sq km, and in a wind it behaves like a small sea. The bank runs about 45 km in total, split between open shore and sheltered corners. It is among the larger waters listed here for Quebec. Labrador City is the closest place, 20 km off. Wabush is 26 km away, with Fermont at 36 km. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Lac Montenon responds to conditions more than to tactics. The far bank looks better because you cannot see the snags.
The seasonal spread runs -23°C to 12°C. This is a two-season water: locked, then wide open. Break-up comes around late May, and the run that follows is short and strong. The season between ice runs from about late May to late October. The weeks after the thaw and the ones before the freeze are the strongest. It holds true on Lac Montenon more years than not.
Nothing in our records says who may fish here. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. A phone call first saves an afternoon. Check whether bait restrictions apply before you buy any. For a change of water, Stevens Lake is 6.4 km distant. Ask locally about Lac Montenon if anything is unclear.
