Lac Mende is one of the Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean listings for Quebec. It sits in spruce and muskeg. The water covers some 14 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. Roughly 2.3 km of bank means you can walk to a fresh area when one goes quiet. Start from Métabetchouan, 40 km down the road. Roberval is 41 km away, with Chambord at 41 km. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Public occurrence data for Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean names northern pike, Atlantic salmon, lake whitefish and fallfish. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. Fish Lac Mende where the bottom changes rather than where it looks deep.
Between January at about -17°C and July at about 17°C, the water has a wide range to work through. The year here is short and sharp: a long lid, then a burst of open water. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around early May. On the long-run averages the water opens up around early May and starts locking again about mid November. The weeks after the thaw and the ones before the freeze are the strongest. At Lac Mende the season follows that pattern closely.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Nothing is mapped in the way of a ramp or car park within a short radius. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Lac Ferland at 1.8 km is the sensible second choice. Check the position at Lac Mende before loading the car.
