Rain colouring the margins today, with light air out of the SSW and the barometer holding steady. The productive water at Lac Marchand will be around any hard bottom among the soft. Quiet conditions all day, with the night marginally better. Save the long walk for a better forecast. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Look for Lac Marchand in Nord-du-Québec, Quebec. Around the bank it is northern bush. With some 75 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. At about 6.0 km of edge, most people work one arm at a time. Nearest place of any size is Chapais, 21 km away. Chibougamau lies 53 km off, Waswanipi another 78 km. The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Records held for Nord-du-Québec cover Arctic charr, brook trout, lake trout, lake whitefish and cisco. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. Take Lac Marchand a stretch at a time.
Climate records put July near 16°C and January near -20°C. Everything is compressed into the middle of the year. Look for the thaw near early May; the fishing lifts straight after. Averages place the thaw at early May and the freeze at mid November. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. Anyone fishing Lac Marchand regularly works to that calendar.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Mapping is blank for access, so scout the approach before committing the car. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Access can change hands, so last year's answer may not hold. For a change of water, Lac Armada is 1.8 km distant. None of that is settled for Lac Marchand in what we hold.
