An even grey lid over the water, with a stiffish breeze from the SSW and the barometer holding steady. The water to cover at Lac Lanouette is the first drop-off and weed lines. The strongest window is the night. Take the steady approach over the searching one. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Lac Lanouette sits in Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean, out in Quebec. The setting is boreal forest on every side. With some 10 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. About 1.6 km of bank, so nothing stays unexplored for long. Normandin is the closest town at 45 km. Further out sit Saint-Félicien (51 km) and Albanel (52 km). There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. County-wide records name northern pike, Atlantic salmon and lake whitefish. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. Anyone new to Lac Lanouette should walk it once before setting up.
Temperature averages peak at 16°C in July and bottom out at -18°C in January. The freeze holds for the better part of the year. Winter fishing happens on the ice here, with open water back around early May. Climate figures give an open season running early May to mid November. The shoulder weeks of the open season are the productive ones. Plan around that when you fish Lac Lanouette.
Whether you may fish here is not something records settle. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. For a change of water, Lac Bonnut is 1.6 km distant. Signs at Lac Lanouette carry more weight than any list.
