Solid cloud cover today, with a soft SSE wind and the barometer holding steady. The water to cover at Lac Joel is the margins and the shelf beyond them. If you must go, go in the morning. Treat it as a scouting trip with a rod in hand. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Lac Joel lies in Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean, in Quebec. Height above sea level is 601 metres. With some 22 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. Around 6.2 km of bank, which is a long day on foot. Compared with other Quebec water on our list, it sits high. The closest town, Pont Rouge, is 190 km distant. Then Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc, 191 km, and Labrecque, 192 km. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Records held for Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean cover northern pike, Atlantic salmon and lake whitefish. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. On Lac Joel a short move beats a long cast.
Averages move between -21°C in January and 15°C in July. Water stays cold even at the height of the year. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near mid May. Average temperatures cross freezing around mid May in spring and again near early November in autumn. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. Lac Joel runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
No public source sets out the position on this bank. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Mapping shows no built access close by; expect to walk in from wherever you can leave the car. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Should this one be busy, La Frayere is 0.5 km off. Rules at Lac Joel are worth checking on the day.
