Lac Heloise, Quebec: Fishing Spots and Seasons

• Overview

  Lac Heloise sits within Nord-du-Québec in Quebec. The surroundings are northern bush. Roughly 22 hectares: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. The bank runs about 2.7 km all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. On size it sits at the modest end of our Nord-du-Québec list. Chapais is the closest town at 10 km. • Where to Fish on Lac Heloise

Nord-du-Québec records list Arctic charr, brook trout, lake trout and lake whitefish among the fish reported. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. Lac Heloise gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.

  In an average year July sits at 16°C and January at -19°C. Winter owns most of the year at this latitude. Break-up comes around early May, and the run that follows is short and strong. On average, early May opens the water and mid November closes it again. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. At Lac Heloise the season follows that pattern closely.

  Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Formal access is not mapped, so the last stretch is likely on foot. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. Lac Cavan, 2.8 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Treat Lac Heloise as unsettled until someone local tells you otherwise.
