A wet system passing over today, with next to no ripple with the barometer flat. Activity on Lac Head should centre on windblown banks where food collects. The strongest window is the morning. Trust the forecast and stay out through the window. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

Within Mauricie, Quebec, you have Lac Head. Taiga runs right down to the water. With some 30 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. Shoreline comes to about 3.1 km, small enough to learn in a day. Head to Weymontachie, 59 km away, for anything you forgot. Beyond it, La Tuque at 60 km and Manawan at 64 km. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
No published figure covers depth, so learn it as you fish. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Records held for Mauricie cover northern pike, brook trout, walleye and yellow perch. Species recorded across the county may be limited to a few waters. Read Lac Head before you fish it and the day goes better.
Between January at about -16°C and July at about 17°C, the water has a wide range to work through. Water stays cold even at the height of the year. Count the season from break-up, usually early May. Break-up sits around early May on average, with the water closing again about mid November. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. Lac Head runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Public data shows nothing built here, so treat the whole approach as informal. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Failing this one, try Lac Denise, 0.7 km away. Rules at Lac Head are worth checking on the day.
