Overcast skies today, with dead-still conditions and pressure going nowhere. Start the search at Lac Gut along sheltered bays and points. The forecast is against you; the night is the least bad option. One good spot fished well beats five fished quickly. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Lac Gut falls in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, part of Quebec. It sits at 286 metres above sea level. Surface area is around 12 hectares, which gives you real water without needing a boat. Shoreline comes to about 4.2 km, small enough to learn in a day. Supplies mean a trip to Saint-Isidore, 38 km off. Further out sit Ville-Marie (39 km) and Saint-Bruno-de-Guigues (47 km). It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Abitibi-Témiscamingue records list northern pike, yellow perch, walleye and white sucker among the fish reported. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. Anyone new to Lac Gut should walk it once before setting up.
Long-term averages put July at about 18°C and January near -15°C. Expect a real winter and a strong spring after it. Look for the thaw near late April; the fishing lifts straight after. Ice clears near late April and comes back about late November in a typical year. Reckon on open water from spring through to late autumn, with May and June the strongest. That shapes the year on Lac Gut.
We hold no note on access for this one. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. If the gate is shut, Lac a la Belle Etoile at 1.2 km is the nearest alternative. Rules at Lac Gut are worth checking on the day.
