Night
Lac Gaston stands in Laurentides, Quebec. The setting is rolling bush on every side. This is a pocket water of some 8 hectares, and every part of it is reachable from the bank. 6.7 km away sits La Minerve, the nearest town. For a city, Orléans is 100 km off. Also within reach: Lac Goujon 0.6 km, Lac Vaseux out at 1 km, Lacs Jumeaux 1.1 km, Lac Myre out at 1.1 km and Lac Aragot 1.2 km. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Survey and observation records for Laurentides include pumpkinseed, smallmouth bass, yellow perch and brook trout. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. Lac Gaston gives up more to patience than to distance.
Between January at about -14°C and July at about 18°C, the water has a wide range to work through. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around late April. Open water usually runs from late April until about late November. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. The season on Lac Gaston rarely departs from it.
The paperwork position is blank for this one. Mapping shows an empty shoreline: no ramp, no jetty, no marked entry. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Rules for this water may differ from the county norm. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Lac Goujon sits 0.6 km off and takes the overflow. None of that is settled for Lac Gaston in what we hold.
