A grey, even sky over the water, with light air out of the S and no real change in pressure. Give shallow cover and weed edges the first hour at Lac Etagnac. One clear peak today: the night. Work fewer spots, but work them properly. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Lac Etagnac is one of the Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean waters in Quebec. What surrounds it is boreal forest. Nearest town is Chibougamau, 85 km off. It is 218 km to Saguenay, the nearest city. Within a short drive: Lac Cudot after 1.4 km, Lac Messague the better part of 3 km, Lac des Verges d'Or after 3.6 km, Lac Sarrola the better part of 3.8 km and Lac des Spectres after 4 km. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
No published figure covers depth, so learn it as you fish. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Open biodiversity records for Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean list northern pike, Atlantic salmon and lake whitefish. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. The shape of Lac Etagnac decides where the fish sit.
The warmest month averages 16°C, the coldest about -19°C. Ice holds for a long stretch, so the open weeks matter more here than further south. Look for the thaw near early May; the fishing lifts straight after. The open-water window runs from around early May to about mid November in an average year. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. It sets the rhythm of the year at Lac Etagnac.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. Access is unmapped, which usually means a farm track and a walk. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. Lac Cudot, 1.4 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Nothing here settles the position at Lac Etagnac for certain.
