A grey, even sky over the water, with a useful SSW wind pushing food about with the glass holding level. Activity on Lac de Roches should centre on sheltered bays and points. Not a day the forecast likes; the night keeps a flicker of interest. Lower the pace and stay patient. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Set in Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean, Quebec, this is Lac de Roches. Country round the bank runs to boreal forest. It covers about 7 hectares, so this is small water you can walk round in under an hour. It is high ground by Quebec standards. For supplies, Leblanc is 68 km out. After that come Weymontachie at 80 km and Normandin at 80 km. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
Nothing in our records gives a depth for this one. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean records list northern pike, Atlantic salmon, lake whitefish and fallfish among the fish reported. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. Anyone new to Lac de Roches should walk it once before setting up.
Climate records put July near 16°C and January near -18°C. Water stays cold even at the height of the year. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about early May. Average temperatures cross freezing around early May in spring and again near early November in autumn. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. Expect Lac de Roches to follow that timing.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. Formal access is not mapped, so the last stretch is likely on foot. Pike mean a wire trace, no exceptions; big spoons and jerkbaits do the searching. Bank access can be seasonal on ground like this. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. Failing this one, try Lac du Pigamon, 1.4 km away. Ask locally about Lac de Roches if anything is unclear.
