Dull, settled light over the water, with next to no ripple with a settled glass. The productive water at Lac Coutu will be around points where shallow meets deep. Set the alarm around the night. Change depth before you change anything else. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Lac Coutu is a Mauricie water, Quebec side. It stands 416 metres above sea level. Around 51 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. A shoreline of some 4.7 km keeps the choices simple. Few waters listed in Mauricie are bigger. Manawan sits 43 km from here and is the nearest stop. The big place round here is Trois-Rivières, 175 km distant. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
No depth figure appears in our records, so the bank has to tell you. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Public occurrence data for Mauricie names northern pike, brook trout, walleye and yellow perch. It is the county picture; the agency list is water-specific. Lac Coutu gives up more to patience than to distance.
In an average year July sits at 17°C and January at -16°C. Everything is compressed into the middle of the year. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about early May. Open water usually runs from early May until about mid November. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. Plan around that when you fish Lac Coutu.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. For a change of water, Lac Leonard is 1.5 km distant. What applies at Lac Coutu may have changed since it was mapped.
