An even grey lid over the water, with a light SSE breeze with the glass holding level. The productive water at Lac Clair will be around windblown banks where food collects. Make the night the heart of the trip. Fish tidy and take what the day gives. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Lac Clair sits in Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean, out in Quebec. The country here is spruce and muskeg. It measures about 40 hectares, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. The edge runs 3.5 km or so, easy to work in an afternoon. On our Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean list it sits near the top for size. The town to know is Normandin, 51 km out. Further out sit Albanel (53 km) and Dolbeau-Mistassini (67 km). The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
The records we hold are silent on depth, so plan to find it yourself. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Species logged across Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean include northern pike, Atlantic salmon and lake whitefish. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. Lac Clair fishes better once you know its edges.
Long-term averages put July at about 16°C and January near -19°C. Cold dominates the year and the fishing works around it. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around early May. Open water usually runs from early May until about mid November. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. Time your trip to Lac Clair by conditions rather than dates.
The paperwork position is blank for this one. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Access is unmapped, which usually means a farm track and a walk. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Sort the permit out before you load the car. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. Lac Eric sits 1.2 km off and takes the overflow. Confirm access to Lac Clair locally before you travel.
