An even grey lid over the water, with a steady SSW wind with the barometer flat. Give the first drop-off and weed lines the first hour at Lac Chapelin. Not a day the forecast likes; the evening keeps a flicker of interest. One good spot fished well beats five fished quickly. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Look for Lac Chapelin in Laurentides, Quebec. The country round it is boreal forest from end to end. It runs to roughly 27 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. The whole outline is near 3.4 km, and most of it is walkable. Size puts it in the front rank of our Laurentides list. Rivière-Rouge lies 48 km from the water. Manawan lies 50 km off, Saint-Michel-des-Saints another 51 km. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. County-wide records name pumpkinseed, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, brook trout and rock bass. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. At Lac Chapelin light and wind decide more than tackle does.
Averages here run 17°C at the top of summer and -16°C at the bottom of winter. Water stays cold even at the height of the year. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around early May. Climate averages put the opening at about early May and the closing near mid November. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. Lac Chapelin fishes to that pattern most years.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. No built facilities appear in mapping around this water. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Failing this one, try Lac Dijon, 0.9 km away. Rules at Lac Chapelin are worth checking on the day.
