A closed sky with even light today, with a busy S wind on the open water and pressure sitting still. Start the search at Lac Budd along sheltered bays and points. Not a day the forecast likes; the night keeps a flicker of interest. Lower the pace and stay patient. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Lac Budd sits in Outaouais, out in Quebec. Everything around it is lake country bush. At about 19 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. Bank access stretches around 2.8 km in total. Saint-Boniface is the closest town at 27 km. Further out sit Ferme-Neuve (34 km) and Mont-Laurier (37 km). It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Outaouais records list pumpkinseed, yellow perch, smallmouth bass, rainbow smelt and Iowa darter among the fish reported. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. The shape of Lac Budd rewards a slow walk along one bank.
Climate normals give 18°C for July and -15°C for January. A full turn of seasons, with the strongest sport on either side of summer. Winter locks it down, and late April brings it back. Break-up near late April, freeze-up near late November: that is the shape of an average year. The weeks after the thaw and the ones before the freeze are the strongest. On Lac Budd the same rules apply, with local timing.
Public sources are silent on who controls the bank. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Access is unmapped, which usually means a farm track and a walk. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Access can change hands, so last year's answer may not hold. For a change of water, Lac du Dos is 1.7 km distant. Ask locally about Lac Budd if anything is unclear.
