Low, flat cloud sitting over the water, with a faint WSW drift with the glass holding level. The water to cover at Lac Barbu is the shallows early and the drop later. Not a day the forecast likes; the night keeps a flicker of interest. Lower the pace and stay patient. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Lac Barbu stands in Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean, Quebec. It sits 24 km in from the sea. It measures about 18 hectares, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. Bank access stretches around 2.9 km in total. It is high ground by Quebec standards. Saint-Fulgence is the closest place, 29 km off. After that come Saint-Honoré at 36 km and La Baie at 38 km. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
There is no published depth for this one, so start shallow and work out. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Survey and observation records for Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean include northern pike, Atlantic salmon, lake whitefish and fallfish. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. Lac Barbu repays a walk before the first cast.
Long-term averages put July at about 15°C and January near -18°C. The ice season is long here and the open one short. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near mid May. Expect the water usable from around mid May until roughly early November. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. It sets the rhythm of the year at Lac Barbu.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Recorded parking is 1.3 km off, far enough to travel light. Pike mean a wire trace, no exceptions; big spoons and jerkbaits do the searching. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. Should this one be busy, Lac Rotule is 1.7 km off. For Lac Barbu, the notice at the access point is the final word.
