An even grey lid over the water, with a gentle ripple from the SW and steady pressure. Give the first drop-off and weed lines the first hour at Lac Ballot. A hard day on paper; the morning edges the rest. Go lighter and slower than usual. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Set in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Quebec, this is Lac Ballot. Land around it is spruce and muskeg. This is a pocket water of some 3 hectares, and every part of it is reachable from the bank. On size it sits at the modest end of our Abitibi-Témiscamingue list. Head to Senneterre, 107 km away, for anything you forgot. Beyond it, Val-d'Or at 112 km and Saint-Boniface at 124 km. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
No depth figure appears in our records, so the bank has to tell you. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Public occurrence data for Abitibi-Témiscamingue names northern pike, yellow perch and walleye. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. At Lac Ballot the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
Average temperature peaks around 17°C in July and bottoms out near -17°C in January. The window is narrow, and fish feed hard while it lasts. Firm cover through the cold months, then open water from early May. The season between ice runs from about early May to mid November. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. Anyone fishing Lac Ballot regularly works to that calendar.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. Mapping is blank for access, so scout the approach before committing the car. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Lac Jubarte at 0.9 km is the sensible second choice. Confirm before you fish Lac Ballot.
