Passing showers with dry spells between, with a soft SSE wind and steady pressure. The water to cover at Lac Balize is points where shallow meets deep. A hard day on paper; the night edges the rest. Scale down and fish slowly. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Set in Côte-Nord, Quebec, this is Lac Balize. The surface lies 218 metres up. About 8 hectares of surface, which puts the far bank inside easy sight. Ground here is low by Quebec standards. The closest town, Havre-Saint-Pierre, is 73 km distant. After that come Maliotenam at 123 km and Sept-Îles at 137 km. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Côte-Nord records list logperch among the fish reported. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. On Lac Balize the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
Expect July near 15°C and January near -16°C on the long-run figures. Winter runs most of the calendar, and everything worth doing happens in the gap. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around mid May. Ice usually gives way near mid May, and forms again about mid November. From the thaw to midsummer the fishing improves week by week. Expect Lac Balize to follow that timing.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Mapping records no facilities at all near this water. For the perch, a small jig tipped with worm, dropped along the edges, is hard to beat. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Failing this one, try Lac Bilodeau, 1.5 km away. What applies at Lac Balize may have changed since it was mapped.
