Dull, settled light over the water, with a light NNW breeze and steady pressure. Whatever swims in Lac Bait should be near points where shallow meets deep. Numbers are low everywhere; the night is the pick of them. Scale down and fish slowly. Biting air and slow fish: small baits, long pauses.

Out in Côte-Nord, Quebec, sits Lac Bait. Elevation runs to 457 metres. It measures about 69 hectares, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. The edge runs 4.2 km or so, easy to work in an afternoon. Supplies mean a trip to Labrador City, 248 km off. The big place round here is Saguenay, 799 km distant. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Species logged across Côte-Nord include logperch. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. Read Lac Bait before you fish it and the day goes better.
Averages move between -24°C in January and 12°C in July. The season is measured in weeks rather than months. After early June the shallows warm and the fish move up. In an average year the thaw lands around early June and the freeze near late October. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. That shapes the year on Lac Bait.
Our records carry no access rule either way. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. Perch take small lures and worms fished near the bottom close to structure. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. Lac Saint-Martin sits 3.1 km off and takes the overflow. Confirm access to Lac Bait locally before you travel.
