Soft grey light all day today, with a working S breeze with a settled glass. On Etang de la Trappe, work the calm side of the wind first. One clear peak today: the night. Work fewer spots, but work them properly. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Etang de la Trappe sits within Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean in Quebec. The surface lies 366 metres up. You are 51 km from Roberval. It is 120 km to Saguenay, the nearest city. Also worth knowing: Lac de la Tete des Mousses a touch under 1 km, Lac Trappe a l'Ours 1 km off, Etang des Mousses a touch under 1.4 km, Lac Luc 2.1 km off and Lac Isabelle a touch under 2.1 km. No border sits close enough to matter.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Species logged across Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean include northern pike, Atlantic salmon and lake whitefish. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. The shape of Etang de la Trappe rewards a slow walk along one bank.
Between January at about -17°C and July at about 17°C, the water has a wide range to work through. The window is narrow, and fish feed hard while it lasts. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about early May. Climate averages put the opening at about early May and the closing near mid November. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. Expect Etang de la Trappe to follow that timing.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Formal access is not mapped, so the last stretch is likely on foot. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Access can change hands, so last year's answer may not hold. Failing this one, try Lac de la Tete des Mousses, 1 km away. For Etang de la Trappe in particular, ask before you travel.
