Clear conditions and high sun today, with a decent NW wind working the banks with a settled glass. Expect most activity at Waseca Lake around the shallows early and the drop later. An ordinary day throughout, patience over timing. Change depth before you change anything else. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Set in Kenora District, Ontario, this is Waseca Lake. The bank gives way to mixed forest. At about 22 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. The perimeter runs near 5.1 km, so plan the walk before you start. On size it sits at the modest end of our Kenora District list. The closest town, Kenora, is 36 km away. For a city, Winnipeg is 156 km off. Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. County-wide records name northern pike, longnose sucker, white sucker and johnny darter. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. On Waseca Lake the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
The warm month here averages 19°C; the cold one sits at -19°C. The freeze arrives properly here and holds. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from late April. Open water usually runs from late April until about mid November. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. On Waseca Lake that shapes the whole year.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Access is unmapped, which usually means a farm track and a walk. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. If the gate is shut, Nahany Lake at 0.8 km is the nearest alternative. None of that is settled for Waseca Lake in what we hold.
