Spitzi Lake, Ontario: Fishing Spots and Seasons

• Overview

  Ontario holds Spitzi Lake, in Kenora District. The surface lies 384 metres up. At 5 hectares it is the sort of place you fish for an evening rather than a day. It is a small entry by Kenora District standards. Kenora at 33 km is the nearest place to stop. Moose Lake is 64 km and Warroad 96 km. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.

• Where to Fish on Spitzi Lake

  Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Kenora District records list northern pike, longnose sucker, white sucker, johnny darter and logperch among the fish reported. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. On Spitzi Lake the first feature you find is usually worth a session.

• Seasonal Patterns

  Between January at about -18°C and July at about 19°C, the water has a wide range to work through. Four clear seasons, with a proper winter at one end. Winter locks it down, and late April brings it back. The season between ice runs from about late April to mid November. The weeks after the thaw and the ones before the freeze are the strongest.
