Solid cloud cover today, with a faint SSE drift and pressure sitting still. Whatever swims in Moth Lake should be near the first drop-off and weed lines. Everything points to the night. Take the steady approach over the searching one. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Moth Lake sits within Kenora District in Ontario. The ground around here is mixed forest. With some 91 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. At about 10 km of edge, most people work one arm at a time. The town to know is Kenora, 38 km out. Moose Lake lies 62 km off, Warroad another 94 km. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
Depth is not on record here, which means reading the ground instead. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. County-wide records name northern pike, longnose sucker, white sucker and johnny darter. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Work Moth Lake in sections rather than trying to cover it.
Averages here run 19°C at the top of summer and -19°C at the bottom of winter. The year splits cleanly: hard water, then open water. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about late April. Averages suggest open water from about late April through to roughly mid November. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. Moth Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
Whether you may fish here is not something records settle. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. No car park, ramp or path is recorded within easy reach of the shore. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Check locally before you travel, because a wasted drive is a long one. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Royal Lake at 3.2 km is the sensible second choice. Treat access at Moth Lake as something to verify.
