A crisp, open sky after dark, with barely a breath of wind and steady pressure. Most of the action on Toe Lake should come off the shallows early and the drop later. The best of it runs the day. Small adjustments will matter more than big moves. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

The Sudbury end of Ontario holds Toe Lake. The country round it is taiga from end to end. It measures about 48 hectares, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. About 3.8 km of bank, so nothing stays unexplored for long. By elevation it is in the upper part of our Ontario listings. 29 km away sits Chapleau, the nearest town. The big place round here is Greater Sudbury, 211 km distant. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Species logged across Sudbury include smallmouth bass, northern pike, yellow perch and Iowa darter. Species recorded across the county may be limited to a few waters. Take Toe Lake a stretch at a time.
The seasonal spread runs -15°C to 17°C. Open water is the exception rather than the rule here. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around late April. Ice clears near late April and comes back about mid November in a typical year. Look to early summer and the first cool weeks of autumn. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Toe Lake.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Mapping shows an empty shoreline: no ramp, no jetty, no marked entry. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Access can change hands, so last year's answer may not hold. Least Lake sits 1.5 km off and takes the overflow. Ask locally about Toe Lake if anything is unclear.
