Showers crossing the water today, with a stiffish breeze from the WNW and pressure sitting still. Most of the action on Smith Lake should come off structure within a cast of the bank. A broad window opens from the day. Commit to the pattern once the first fish shows. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Night
Within Rainy River District, Ontario, you have Smith Lake. Height above sea level is 417 metres. Roughly 77 hectares: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. The outline measures near 8.2 km, so local knowledge counts. Atikokan is the closest place, 19 km off. Ignace follows at 63 km, then Ely at 112 km. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Fish documented in Rainy River District include northern pike, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, walleye and white sucker. It is the county picture; the agency list is water-specific. Smith Lake gives up more to patience than to distance.
Average temperature peaks around 18°C in July and bottoms out near -18°C in January. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around late April. From about late April to around mid November, expect open water on the long-run figures. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. On Smith Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Mapping records no facilities at all near this water. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. Husband Lake at 2.2 km is the sensible second choice. The position on Smith Lake is worth confirming on the day.
