Cloud coming and going through the night, with a busy WNW wind on the open water and steady pressure. Whatever swims in Bog Lake should be near the calm side of the wind. The day fishes best from the day. Fish confidently and change only when the bites stop. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Bog Lake is a Rainy River District water, in Ontario. Elevation runs to 415 metres. It runs to roughly 20 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. Around 2.8 km of margin, front to back. It is a small entry by Rainy River District standards. Atikokan lies 17 km from the water. It is 172 km to Thunder Bay, the nearest city. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. County-wide records name northern pike, smallmouth bass, yellow perch and walleye. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Bog Lake responds to conditions more than to tactics.
Averages move between -18°C in January and 18°C in July. Expect a real winter and a strong spring after it. Ice-out usually falls in late April, and the weeks after it fish hardest. Open water usually runs from late April until about mid November. From the thaw to midsummer the fishing improves week by week. It holds true on Bog Lake more years than not.
Whether you may fish here is not something records settle. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Should this one be busy, Smith Lake is 2.9 km off. For Bog Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
