No cloud to trap the day's warmth tonight, with almost no wind to speak of and pressure sitting still. On Savage Lake, work the shaded margin through bright spells first. Make the evening the heart of the trip. Make the first hour count and build on it. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

You will find Savage Lake in Sudbury, Ontario. Land around it is rolling bush. Roughly 3.16 sq km of surface: treat each bay as a water in its own right. The outline measures near 16 km, so local knowledge counts. On our Sudbury list it sits near the top for size. The closest town, Espanola, is 26 km distant. Elliot Lake follows at 48 km, then Little Current at 49 km. One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. County-wide records name smallmouth bass, northern pike, yellow perch, Iowa darter and walleye. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. At Savage Lake the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
Average temperature peaks around 18°C in July and bottoms out near -12°C in January. Four clear seasons, with a proper winter at one end. Once it clears, about late April, the fishing comes on quickly. On the long-run averages the water opens up around late April and starts locking again about late November. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. On Savage Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
Public data does not answer the access question here. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. No built facilities appear in mapping around this water. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Bank access can be seasonal on ground like this. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. Streich Lake, 2.5 km away, makes the obvious fallback. None of that is settled for Savage Lake in what we hold.
