Broken cloud drifting past the moon tonight, with a helpful ripple pushed from the W and no real change in pressure. Whatever swims in Sandspit Lake should be near the margins and the shelf beyond them. Numbers are low everywhere; the morning is the pick of them. Go lighter and slower than usual.

Look for Sandspit Lake in the Sudbury part of Ontario. The water sits 382 metres up. The water covers some 22 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. The perimeter runs near 5.2 km, so plan the walk before you start. Start from Capreol, 45 km down the road. After that come Valley East at 51 km and Rayside-Balfour at 58 km. No border sits close enough to matter.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Records held for Sudbury cover smallmouth bass, northern pike, yellow perch and Iowa darter. The county list is broader than any single water. Sandspit Lake fishes better once you know its edges.
In an average year July sits at 18°C and January at -16°C. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around late April. Break-up near late April, freeze-up near late November: that is the shape of an average year. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. Sandspit Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
No access rule appears in what we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. No made access is recorded, so a short walk in is the likely arrangement. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. Gourlay Lake sits 1.1 km off and takes the overflow. Signs at Sandspit Lake carry more weight than any list.
