Rain moving through today, with a light chop building from the W and steady pressure. Fish at Bass Lake should hold close to structure within a cast of the bank. Numbers are low everywhere; the morning is the pick of them. Go lighter and slower than usual. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

The Sudbury entry here is Bass Lake, in Ontario. The bank gives way to lake country bush. The water covers some 33 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. Roughly 3.9 km of bank means you can walk to a fresh area when one goes quiet. Capreol is the closest place, 50 km off. The big place round here is Greater Sudbury, 74 km distant. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Species logged across Sudbury include smallmouth bass, northern pike, yellow perch, Iowa darter and walleye. The county list is broader than any single water. Bass Lake gives up more to patience than to distance.
July runs about 18°C on average, January about -16°C. Winter shuts things down for a spell, then spring reopens them fast. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near late April. Climate figures give an open season running late April to late November. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. The season on Bass Lake rarely departs from it.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Mapping shows no built access close by; expect to walk in from wherever you can leave the car. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Rules for this water may differ from the county norm. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. Brennan Lake, 2.5 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Rules at Bass Lake are worth checking on the day.
