Solid cloud cover today, with just enough W wind to ripple the surface and no real change in pressure. The productive water at Prospect Lake will be around the shallows early and the drop later. A tough forecast; the morning offers the only real chance. Treat it as a scouting trip with a rod in hand.

The Thunder Bay District entry here is Prospect Lake, in Ontario. Country round the bank runs to spruce and muskeg. It runs to roughly 27 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. About 3.9 km of bank, so nothing stays unexplored for long. The closest town, Terrace Bay, is 20 km distant. The big place round here is Thunder Bay, 184 km distant. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Species logged across Thunder Bay District include cisco, blackfin cisco, rainbow smelt, bloater and shortjaw cisco. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. Read Prospect Lake for ten minutes before the first cast goes out.
July is the warm end of the year here, averaging about 16°C, while January sits near -16°C. Winter runs most of the calendar, and everything worth doing happens in the gap. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from early May. From about early May to around mid November, expect open water on the long-run figures. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. Prospect Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. There is no mapped parking or launch close by, which usually means walking in. A light spinning outfit with a small box of lures and some bait covers most of what swims here. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. Should this one be busy, Santoy Lake is 2.2 km off. Confirm access to Prospect Lake locally before you travel.
