Moon Lake is set in Thunder Bay District, Ontario. The surface lies 236 metres up. Surface area runs to about 8 hectares — small enough to read in one session. On size it sits at the modest end of our Thunder Bay District list. The nearest place of any size is Terrace Bay, 14 km away. Further out sit Schreiber (25 km) and Manitouwadge (85 km). It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Survey and observation records for Thunder Bay District include cisco, blackfin cisco and rainbow smelt. County records show the wider picture rather than this one place. At Moon Lake the first feature you find is worth twenty minutes.
Average temperature peaks around 16°C in July and bottoms out near -16°C in January. Cold dominates the year and the fishing works around it. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about early May. On average, early May opens the water and mid November closes it again. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. Moon Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. Nothing is mapped in the way of a ramp or car park within a short radius. A light spinning outfit with a small box of lures and some bait covers most of what swims here. Check whether a boat is allowed before you tow one. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Sawmill Lake at 1.3 km is the sensible second choice. The position on Moon Lake is worth confirming on the day.
