A closed sky with even light today, with a light WNW breeze with a settled glass. Fish at Plover Lake should hold close to the shallows early and the drop later. A tough forecast; the middle of the day offers the only real chance. Keep baits small and presentations quiet. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Out in Nipissing District, Ontario, sits Plover Lake. This is rolling bush ground. Surface area is around 56 hectares, which gives you real water without needing a boat. There is roughly 5.9 km of bank, more than one visit can cover properly. Start from Mattawa, 50 km down the road. Deep River is 59 km away, with Chalk River at 62 km. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Species logged across Nipissing District include smallmouth bass, cisco and yellow perch. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. Take Plover Lake a stretch at a time.
Expect July near 18°C and January near -13°C on the long-run figures. Expect a real winter and a strong spring after it. Once it clears, about late April, the fishing comes on quickly. Break-up near late April, freeze-up near late November: that is the shape of an average year. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. That shapes the year on Plover Lake.
Our records carry no access rule either way. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. There is a campsite 730 m from the water. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Sort the permit out before you load the car. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Should this one be busy, Snipe Lake is 1.4 km off. Where Plover Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
