A clear night sky over the water, with steady pressure of wind from the NW with the glass holding level. Most of the action on Parent Lake should come off inflow corners and shaded margins. Numbers are low everywhere; the night is the pick of them. Scale down and fish slowly. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Parent Lake lies in Timiskaming District, Ontario. The surface lies 469 metres up. With some 43 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. Around 4.9 km of margin, front to back. It is high ground by Ontario standards. Supplies mean a trip to Capreol, 74 km off. The nearest city of size is Greater Sudbury, 98 km away. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. County-wide records name brook trout, northern pike, yellow perch, Iowa darter and walleye. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. On Parent Lake that means starting tight and working out.
July runs about 17°C on average, January about -16°C. Long winters and short summers set the pattern. Firm cover through the cold months, then open water from early May. Expect the water usable from around early May until roughly mid November. Look to early summer and the first cool weeks of autumn. Plan around that when you fish Parent Lake.
Our records carry no access rule either way. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. There is no mapped parking or launch nearby, which keeps numbers down. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Rules for this water may differ from the county norm. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. Step Lake sits 1.4 km off and takes the overflow. Treat access at Parent Lake as something to verify.
