Dull, settled light over the water, with steady pressure of wind from the SW and steady pressure. The fish at Desert Lake are likely to sit near shallow cover and weed edges. A hard day on paper; the night edges the rest. Scale down and fish slowly. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Ontario holds Desert Lake, in Timiskaming District. The country here is boreal forest. It runs to roughly 45 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. Bank access stretches around 3.6 km in total. Compared with other Ontario water on our list, it sits high. Start from Capreol, 72 km down the road. The big place round here is Greater Sudbury, 96 km distant. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Reported across Timiskaming District: brook trout, northern pike and yellow perch. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. On Desert Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Climate records put July near 17°C and January near -16°C. Water stays cold even at the height of the year. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around early May. The open-water window runs from around early May to about mid November in an average year. The weeks after the thaw and the ones before the freeze are the strongest. It sets the rhythm of the year at Desert Lake.
Public data does not answer the access question here. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. There is no recorded infrastructure here; expect to find your own way in. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. If the gate is shut, Step Lake at 1.1 km is the nearest alternative. Treat Desert Lake as unsettled until someone local tells you otherwise.
