Bright moon and an empty sky tonight, with a kind W breeze on the water with the glass holding level. Fish at Paint Lake should hold close to the calm side of the wind. A grinding day likely, with the night worth the effort if any is. Save the long walk for a better forecast. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

The Algoma end of Ontario holds Paint Lake. It sits at 421 metres above sea level. At about 29 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. The whole outline is near 2.4 km, and most of it is walkable. Nearest place of any size is Wawa, 74 km away. Manitouwadge lies 74 km off, Hornepayne another 87 km. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
There is no recorded depth, so work from what you can see. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Algoma records list walleye, northern pike, Iowa darter and yellow perch among the fish reported. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. On Paint Lake the first feature you find is usually worth a session.
Seasonal averages run from -17°C in January up to 16°C in July. The year here is short and sharp: a long lid, then a burst of open water. Ice is part of the season here, ending near early May. On the long-run averages the water opens up around early May and starts locking again about mid November. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. At Paint Lake the season follows that pattern closely.
Nothing on record says whether the bank is open or closed. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Mapping is blank for access, so scout the approach before committing the car. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Jimbo Lake, 1.7 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Check the position at Paint Lake before loading the car.
