A grey, even sky over the water, with steady pressure of wind from the W with the barometer flat. On Mountain Lake, work structure within a cast of the bank first. A hard day on paper; the evening edges the rest. Lower the pace and stay patient. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

Mountain Lake is set in Algoma, Ontario. The bank is 390 metres above sea level. The water covers around 1.09 sq km, which puts most of it out of reach from the bank. The edge covers about 6.3 km, enough to hold several distinct areas. Size puts it in the front rank of our Algoma list. Supplies mean a trip to Wawa, 44 km off. Beyond it, Chapleau at 95 km and Hornepayne at 102 km. No border sits close enough to matter.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Species logged across Algoma include walleye, northern pike, Iowa darter and yellow perch. Take it as the county picture rather than a promise for this water. Mountain Lake repays a walk before the first cast.
The year swings from about -16°C in January to roughly 16°C in July. The year here is short and sharp: a long lid, then a burst of open water. Ice-out usually falls in early May, and the weeks after it fish hardest. Break-up near early May, freeze-up near mid November: that is the shape of an average year. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. On Mountain Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. No made access appears within a short radius, so plan to park on a verge and walk. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. For a change of water, Tavis Lake is 1.8 km distant. Treat Mountain Lake as unsettled until someone local tells you otherwise.
