No direct sun expected today, with a working WSW breeze and pressure going nowhere. The water to cover at MacDonald Lake is inflow corners and shaded margins. Numbers are low everywhere; the middle of the day is the pick of them. Take the small wins and call it early if it dies. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

MacDonald Lake sits in Parry Sound District, out in Ontario. The setting is lake country bush on every side. With some 19 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. Bank access stretches around 3.6 km in total. It lies lower than most water we list in Ontario. Sturgeon Falls sits 40 km from the bank. Greater Sudbury sits 100 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
Depth went unrecorded, which puts the reading back on you. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Public occurrence data for Parry Sound District names smallmouth bass, pumpkinseed and yellow perch. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Anyone new to MacDonald Lake should walk it once before setting up.
Between January at about -12°C and July at about 19°C, the water has a wide range to work through. The year splits cleanly: hard water, then open water. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly late April. Break-up sits around late April on average, with the water closing again about early December. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. On MacDonald Lake that shapes the whole year.
The access position is unclear from public sources. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. No car park, ramp or path is recorded within easy reach of the shore. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Failing this one, try Kilty Lake, 1.1 km away. Nothing here settles the position at MacDonald Lake for certain.
