A crisp, open sky after dark, with a steady NW wind and pressure going nowhere. The water to cover at Rainy Lake is structure within a cast of the bank. The day holds up well from the day. Work the productive water thoroughly. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Rainy Lake sits in Parry Sound District, out in Ontario. The country round it is pine and birch from end to end. The water covers some 84 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. Size puts it in the front rank of our Parry Sound District list. Some 35 km away sits Powassan, the nearest settlement. It is 105 km to Greater Sudbury, the nearest city. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Records held for Parry Sound District cover smallmouth bass, pumpkinseed, yellow perch, northern pike and rock bass. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. On Rainy Lake the first feature you find is usually worth a session.
The warmest month averages 19°C, the coldest about -12°C. Spring and autumn carry the fishing; summer and winter test it. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around late April. The lid tends to go about late April and return around early December. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. Rainy Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
No public source sets out the position on this bank. No slipway, car park or made path shows up nearby in mapping, so treat access as rough. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. If the gate is shut, Little Rainy Lake at 0.8 km is the nearest alternative. None of that is settled for Rainy Lake in what we hold.
