Full sun on the water today, with the water lying quiet and steady pressure. The productive water at Long Lake will be around the calm side of the wind. Make the middle of the day the heart of the trip. Pick two or three spots and rotate them. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Long Lake sits within Algoma in Ontario. The land about it is lake country bush. With some 34 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. With 8.1 km or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. You are 16 km from Thessalon. Beyond it, Blind River at 39 km and Elliot Lake at 60 km. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
Depth is unmeasured here, so let the shoreline guide you. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Fish documented in Algoma include walleye, northern pike and Iowa darter. The list covers the county rather than this water alone, so treat it as a guide. The near bank of Long Lake is often the one people ignore.
Averages here run 18°C at the top of summer and -11°C at the bottom of winter. Winter closes the water for a while, and the reopening is worth catching. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near mid April. The season between ice runs from about mid April to early December. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. The season on Long Lake follows the weather closely.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. No launch point is recorded nearby, so this is a bank water unless you carry a boat in. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Failing this one, try Basswood Lake, 1.9 km away. Treat Long Lake as unsettled until someone local tells you otherwise.
