Broken cloud and shifting light today, with just enough SSE wind to ripple the surface with the barometer flat. Whatever swims in Lawrence Lake should be near windblown banks where food collects. Make the middle of the day the heart of the trip. Commit to the pattern once the first fish shows.

In Ontario, Lawrence Lake belongs to Kenora District. It sits in lake country bush country. Around 20.64 sq km of open water: conditions change from one end to the other. It ranks high for size among our Kenora District listings. Some 65 km away sits Vermilion Bay, the nearest settlement. Beyond it, Dryden at 72 km and Fort Frances at 73 km. The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Kenora District records list northern pike, longnose sucker, white sucker, johnny darter and logperch among the fish reported. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. The shape of Lawrence Lake decides where the fish sit.
Long-run averages give July about 19°C and January about -17°C. Winter puts a hard lid on this one. Ice-out usually falls in late April, and the weeks after it fish hardest. From about late April to around mid November, expect open water on the long-run figures. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. It sets the rhythm of the year at Lawrence Lake.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. Fishing from a pier is possible 1.2 km away. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Hector Lake, 4.5 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Signs at Lawrence Lake carry more weight than any list.
