No direct sun expected today, with the surface near flat and steady pressure. Fish at Hook Lake should hold close to the margins and the shelf beyond them. Bank on the evening and treat the rest as bonus. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Look for Hook Lake in the Kenora District part of Ontario. It stands 374 metres above sea level. At about 87 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. At about 8.0 km of edge, most people work one arm at a time. For supplies, Fort Frances is 68 km out. International Falls is 70 km away, with Vermilion Bay at 71 km. No boundary runs near, so the local rules hold throughout.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Open biodiversity records for Kenora District list northern pike, longnose sucker and white sucker. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. Hook Lake repays a walk before the first cast.
Climate normals give 19°C for July and -17°C for January. The year runs cold to warm and back, with clear transitions. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near late April. Ice clears near late April and comes back about mid November in a typical year. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. Plan any trip to Hook Lake around it.
Nothing in our records says who may fish here. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. A phone call first saves an afternoon. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. For a change of water, Asheigamo Lake is 1.7 km distant. Where Hook Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
