Solid cloud cover today, with a soft WNW wind with the barometer flat. Fish at Kagiano Lake should hold close to the weed line and any gaps in it. Little to get excited about, though the night holds a sliver of promise. Lower the pace and stay patient. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Kagiano Lake sits within Thunder Bay District in Ontario. It sits at 309 metres above sea level. It covers about 15.42 sq km, which means weather matters as much as tactics. Some 87 km of shoreline means conditions can differ from one end to the other. Size puts it in the front rank of our Thunder Bay District list. 46 km away sits Manitouwadge, the nearest town. After that come Longlac at 53 km and Geraldton at 61 km. This one is safely inside the county line.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Across Thunder Bay District, recorded fish include cisco, blackfin cisco, rainbow smelt and bloater. County data is a starting point rather than a guarantee. On Kagiano Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Average temperature peaks around 16°C in July and bottoms out near -18°C in January. The window is narrow, and fish feed hard while it lasts. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough early May. Open water usually runs from early May until about mid November. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. Kagiano Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Nothing is mapped in the way of a ramp or car park within a short radius. One rod, a handful of hooks and floats, and a few small lures are enough for this water. Sort the permit out before you load the car. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Eris Lake at 4.4 km is the sensible second choice. None of that is settled for Kagiano Lake in what we hold.
