Soft grey light all day today, with mild air moving in from the WNW and no real change in pressure. The productive water at Helios Lake will be around the margins and the shelf beyond them. Expectations low today; if anything moves, it will be in the night. Lower the pace and stay patient. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Night
Set in Thunder Bay District, Ontario, this is Helios Lake. It sits at 314 metres above sea level. Roughly 54 hectares: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. A shoreline of some 3.6 km keeps the choices simple. For supplies, Manitouwadge is 47 km out. Then Longlac, 59 km, and Geraldton, 64 km. One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
Depth went unrecorded, which puts the reading back on you. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. County-wide records name cisco, blackfin cisco and rainbow smelt. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. Work Helios Lake in sections rather than trying to cover it.
Between January at about -18°C and July at about 16°C, the water has a wide range to work through. Open water is the exception rather than the rule here. Ice is part of the season here, ending near early May. The lid tends to go about early May and return around mid November. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. Anyone fishing Helios Lake regularly works to that calendar.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Formal access is not mapped, so the last stretch is likely on foot. One rod, a handful of hooks and floats, and a few small lures are enough for this water. Local rules can differ across the county line, so check where you stand. Check whether bait restrictions apply before you buy any. If the gate is shut, Lobelia Lake at 4.9 km is the nearest alternative. None of that is settled for Helios Lake in what we hold.
